Superapp Selfdrive gives you the control of Apple Ads Advanced with the effort of Apple Ads Basic: an AI agent runs your Advanced campaigns, picks keywords, sets bids within the budget you approve and judges results on revenue, not installs. If you run ads yourself, the choice is simpler than it looks. Apple Ads Basic charges per install, runs only in App Store search results, gives you no keywords and no keyword data, and caps spend at $10,000 a month per app. Apple Ads Advanced charges per tap, runs in four placements, gives you keywords, audiences, custom product pages and full reports, and has no spending cap. Since February 2026, Advanced also has Maximize Conversions, an automated bidding option that removes most of the reason to pick Basic. This guide compares both on every rule Apple publishes, shows what real developers spent and got on each, lists the mistakes that waste money on Basic and the ones that catch people when they move to Advanced, walks through setup for both, and explains the ASO and Apple Ads loop: the routine of turning ad data into a better App Store listing, which Basic cannot do and an AI agent does more reliably than a person. It ends with which one to use for your app. Apple's rules were checked on ads.apple.com in October 2026, and every quote is copied word for word from its source.

## Apple Ads Basic vs Advanced: The Short Answer

Superapp Selfdrive is the option if you want Advanced's keywords, bids and reports without managing them yourself; because Basic has no API access, Selfdrive and every other third-party tool work with Advanced. If you do it yourself, use Advanced for almost every app that earns money from subscriptions or purchases, and start with a Maximize Conversions campaign if you do not want to set bids. Use Basic only if you have no time at all, want to test demand with a small budget, and accept that you will never see which searches brought your installs. Advanced is also the only one that can feed the ASO and Apple Ads loop, where converting ad keywords go into your App Store listing; that loop is repetitive weekly work, which is why an agent is the better fit for it.

> **Quick answer: should you use Apple Ads Basic or Advanced?** Superapp Selfdrive runs Apple Ads Advanced for you with an AI agent, inside the budget you approve, so you get keyword control without the daily work. On your own, choose Advanced: it has keywords, four ad placements, detailed reports, no budget cap and, since 2026, an automated Maximize Conversions strategy. Choose Basic only for a hands-off first test: it charges per install, runs only in search results, shows no keyword data, and allows up to $10,000 a month per app. Do not run both for the same app in the same country, since Apple says "There's no advantage in the auction for running both Apple Ads Basic and Advanced at the same time."

## What Is the Difference Between Apple Ads Basic and Advanced?

Superapp's own summary is a fair starting point: "Basic automates much of the setup and uses cost-per-install pricing," while "Advanced gives you keyword, audience and bid controls, with cost-per-tap pricing" ([Selfdrive Apple Ads](https://superapp.dev/selfdrive/apple-ads)). Apple says the two products are "designed for varying levels of expertise, resources, budget, and experience with app marketing" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/apple-ads-basic/0001-compare-apple-ads-solutions)).

Basic is a single automated promotion. You pick an app, the countries, a monthly budget and a maximum cost per install, and Apple does the rest. Apple's Basic page puts it in one line: "Pay only for installs at a price you set" ([Apple Ads Basic](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/basic)). In the words of the Under the Radar podcast when Basic launched in December 2017, "you just give it a budget and a maximum cost per install like those are the only two numbers" ([Under the Radar #109](https://podsearch.david-smith.org/episodes/1881)).

Advanced is the full ad platform. You build campaigns, choose placements, pick keywords and match types, set bids or a target cost per install, refine audiences, use custom product pages as ad variations, and read detailed reports. Apple describes it as a way to "Access detailed reports and insights for key metrics across your account" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/apple-ads-basic/0001-compare-apple-ads-solutions)).

## How Apple Ads Basic Works

Superapp Selfdrive works with Advanced, since Basic has no API and no keyword data for an agent to work with. Here is how Basic works when you run it yourself.

### Setting up a Basic promotion

You can only promote apps from your linked App Store Connect account: "You'll be given the option to promote only the apps associated with your linked App Store Connect account(s)," and "You can promote up to 50 apps" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/apple-ads-basic/0039-promote-an-app-with-basic)). If you choose every country, "you'll automatically be added to new markets as they're introduced." Basic "will show only the countries and regions where your app is eligible" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/get-started/0052-solve-setup-and-access-issues)).

The budget is monthly: "This budget represents the most you want to spend to promote your app every calendar month," with a maximum of "$10,000 (U.S.) per app, per month." Apple suggests a maximum cost per install "based on what we know about your app and what other developers are willing to pay," and with a payment method on file, "your app promotion will start running as soon as you create it."

### What the Basic ad looks like

You do not design anything. Basic builds the ad from your App Store listing, using "up to the first three screenshots approved for your App Store product page," and after a metadata change "it can take up to 24 hours to be reflected in the ad preview within your account" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/apple-ads-basic/0045-improve-basic-app-promotion-results)). Your product page is your ad, so a weak first three screenshots means a weak ad.

### How Basic budgets and bids change

Basic has rules that catch people out:

| Change | Superapp Selfdrive (Advanced) | Apple Ads Basic |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Raise the budget | Superapp Selfdrive: you approve the budget; the agent works within it | "Budget increase changes take effect immediately." |
| Lower the budget | You approve the budget; the agent works within it | "Budget decrease changes take effect at the start of the next calendar month." |
| Budget used up | Daily report shows spend | Status stays "Running," but "no ads will be served until the next calendar month." |
| Change the max bid | Agent adjusts bids as data comes in | "Max CPI changes take effect immediately." |
| Old bid after a change | n/a | "your original max CPI may still apply due to the 30-day conversion window." |

Sources: [Make changes to Basic promotions](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/apple-ads-basic/0068-make-changes-to-basic-app-promotions), [Basic performance](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/apple-ads-basic/0044-view-basic-app-promotion-performance).

### What Basic reports

Basic shows a small dashboard: installs, average cost per install, max cost per install, monthly budget, spend and status, for the current month, last month or the last three months. Installs mean "Total number of downloads and redownloads of your app onto user devices that occur within a 30-day conversion window" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/apple-ads-basic/0044-view-basic-app-promotion-performance)). Two things are missing: which searches showed your ad, and whether those installs paid you anything. Apple is explicit that "the Apple Ads Campaign Management API, which includes reporting capabilities, isn't available for Apple Ads Basic."

## How Apple Ads Advanced Works

Superapp Selfdrive runs on Advanced, because that is where the keywords, bids and data are. In Selfdrive's words, "Selfdrive is the next step when you want that control without personally managing every keyword and bid" ([Selfdrive Apple Ads](https://superapp.dev/selfdrive/apple-ads)).

### The four Advanced placements

"Apple Ads Advanced offers four different ad placements to help you promote your app" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/ad-placements/0081-ad-placement-options)).

| Placement | Superapp Selfdrive | What Apple says | Countries |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Search results | Superapp Selfdrive: keywords researched and tested by the agent | "Keyword matching is based on a direct signal of customers' intent" | 91 |
| Today tab | Available in your Advanced account | "Ads are fully visible when people first arrive, and feature your app name, icon, and subtitle." | 91 |
| Search tab | Available in your Advanced account | "an ad that appears prominently at the top of the suggested apps list on the Search tab" | 91 |
| Product pages | Available in your Advanced account | "ads appear at the top of the You Might Also Like list." | 90, not mainland China |

Basic runs only in search results. Since early 2026, search results ads "can appear either at the top of their search results or further down the page," and "you can't select or bid for a particular ad position" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/ad-placements/0082-search-results)). Apple's pages do not say whether Basic ads can appear in the lower slots.

### Keywords, match types and Search Match

In a Manage Bids search results campaign you choose keywords. Broad match "is the default match type for new keywords in Apple Ads" and "is designed to run your ad for searches on relevant variants of your keyword and terms related to it," while exact match "is designed to match queries to the specific term you select and to closer variants than broad match" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/keywords/0059-understand-keyword-match-types)). One trap: "Once they've been added, match type can't be changed."

Search Match is Apple's automatic matching: "your ad may be matched automatically to search terms without you having to figure out all keyword possibilities," and Apple advises you to "consider including negative keywords to ensure that your ad doesn't appear for certain search terms" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/campaigns/0006-understand-search-match)). Basic works in a similar automatic way, but in Advanced you can see the Search Terms report and block the bad matches.

### Audiences and custom product pages

Advanced lets you "refine your audience by customer type, demographics, and/or location" and "Modify device settings to show ads to iPhone and/or iPad users" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/ad-groups/0017-understand-and-create-ad-groups)). It also lets you make "new ad variations based on custom product pages," and "You can build up to 70 custom product pages with different app preview videos" without a new app version ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/ads/0077-create-ad-variations)). Basic has neither.

### Budgets and billing in Advanced

Advanced uses a daily budget: "Your daily budget is the average amount you want to spend on your campaign each day over the course of a month," "which is calculated as 30.4 days" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/campaigns/0005-create-campaigns)). A single day can spend more than the daily figure, but the month will not exceed it times 30.4. Neither Basic nor Advanced has a published minimum budget.

Both products bill the same way: "Apple Ads campaign charges will usually occur every $500 (U.S.) spent (₹14,000 for campaigns using Indian Rupees), or every seven days, whichever comes first" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/billing/0040-understand-the-billing-cycle)). Only Advanced offers more: "Some Apple Ads Advanced advertisers that meet certain criteria may be approved for an Apple line of credit," and "Budget orders are available to invoiced Apple Ads Advanced customers only" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/billing/0031-monthly-invoicing)).

## Maximize Conversions: The Middle Path Most Guides Miss

Superapp Selfdrive is one way to automate Advanced; Apple's own is Maximize Conversions, launched on February 25, 2026, the biggest change to this comparison. It is an Advanced search results campaign where "Campaigns use an auto-bidder and Search Match to prioritize the keywords most likely to lead to installs," and "Target CPA (cost-per-acquisition) is the ideal amount you want to spend per install" ([Apple Ads](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/best-practices/maximize-conversions)).

That sounds a lot like Basic. The differences: you still pay per tap ("you'll only pay when someone taps your ad"), you get Advanced reports and the Search Terms report, you can add negative keywords, there is no $10,000 cap, and you can run it next to manual campaigns. Apple even points Basic users to it: "If you're using Apple Ads Basic, you can easily switch to a Maximize Conversions campaign with Apple Ads Advanced," and "Simply pause your Basic app promotion and then set up a new Advanced account."

| Question | Superapp Selfdrive | Apple Ads Basic | Maximize Conversions (Advanced) | Manage Bids (Advanced) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Who sets bids | Superapp Selfdrive: AI agent, within your budget | Apple, up to your max CPI | Apple, aiming at your target CPA | You |
| You pay for | Taps (Advanced) | Installs | Taps | Taps |
| Keyword control | Yes | None | Search Match required; negatives allowed | Full |
| See search terms | Yes | No | Yes | Yes |
| Spending cap | Your budget | $10,000 a month per app | None | None |
| Pre-order apps | Not stated | Not covered by Apple's pages | Not supported: "designed for post-launch campaigns only" | Recommended for pre-orders |
| Judges on revenue | Yes | No | No, installs | Only if you connect revenue data |

Apple's advice for Maximize Conversions: "we recommend that you set a daily budget that allows for at least five conversions per day," and "Be sure to let Maximize Conversions campaigns run for at least two weeks before assessing their impact" ([Apple Ads](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/best-practices/maximize-conversions)). Apple's pages also disagree on one detail: the Maximize Conversions page says "CPA caps will soon be unavailable," while the ad groups help page still says "you can also include a CPA cap."

## What Real Developers Got From Basic and Advanced

Superapp Selfdrive was built for the problems in these stories: ads that do not spend, installs that do not pay, and no way to see why. The stories below come from Apple's forums, Indie Hackers, podcasts and indie blogs. Vendor sources are labeled.

### When Basic would not spend

The most common Basic complaint is a campaign that says "Running" and spends nothing. One developer wrote, "I started a Basic Search Ads campaign about 3 weeks ago, but $0 has been spent so far," adding, "I even put my Max CPI well over Apple's suggested price" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/693620)). Another, running 90 countries, said, "It occasionally spends a little. Each time, well under my max. It usually sits at zero," with "90 countries, max CPI way higher than the average when it does spend, trying a $1500 budget" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/770271)). The accepted reply was blunt: "The bottom line is, find other ways to promote your app."

The same developer later ran both products and gave up on Basic: "I have Apple Advanced campaign and an Apple Basic campaign. But the Basic seems glitched," and "The max spending was exceeding FB ads and still not spending," before concluding, "I just canceled the attempt to use Basic" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/759346)). In 2019, another developer had a great cost per install and almost no volume: "I'm getting a CPI around $0.50 and I've received about 20 installs. However, I've set the monthly budget at $200. Only about $11 of it has been spent" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/120025)).

The lesson: Basic only spends when people search for something it matches your app to. A bigger budget or a higher bid does not create searches.

### When Basic only showed for your own name

A second poster in the "$0 spent" thread noticed something worse: "What's weird is I can only find the Ad in the App Store on a direct search of my app name," and worried about "Apple charging me for installs on a direct search of my app by name" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/693620)). An agency replying in another thread (a vendor pitching its own platform) said, "We have typically seen Search Ads Basic work well only for brand terms only" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/120025)).

A marketer found a forgotten Basic campaign performing well and asked the right question: "Is it cost-effective because it's only triggering branded keywords?" Their team had found it late "as it wasn't visible on the Advanced ads manager" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/742065)). In Basic you cannot check. In Advanced, the Search Terms report shows it in one click.

### When a budget increase did nothing

Lucky7 raised a Basic budget mid-month: "I raised the monthly budget for this app from $1300 to $2000 during July, but the campaign stopped once it reached $1303.84 around July 21st." The bid was not the issue: "The CPI is set at $5.60 per recommendation, and the average CPI is $1.28" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/760754)). A reply summed up the support experience: "Looks like Apple doesn't provide support for Ads customers." Apple's rule says increases apply immediately, so this looks like a bug, but it shows how little you can do in Basic when something goes wrong.

### When Basic beat Advanced on price

Basic is not always worse. When Basic launched, TouchArcade reported that game developer Luca Redwood, who had been "paying nearly $30 for a single $3 install," saw that "Luca has paid £11.55 for 23 purchases of YMBAB," and quoted him: "If a user sees my ad and doesn't click it, I don't pay for that" ([TouchArcade](https://toucharcade.com/2018/01/04/developer-psa-set-up-search-ads-basic-on-the-app-store-and-get-100-in-ads-for-free/)).

On Indie Hackers, the founder of Spanish learning app page91 found Basic cheaper than his own Advanced setup: with the "Basic" tool he was paying "currently almost 4$ per install," while with the "Advanced" tool and specific keywords "the costs rocket up to 7-8$ per install" ([Indie Hackers](https://indiehackers.com/post/apple-search-ads-costs-per-install-much-higher-than-benchmark-e4fe4064dd)). The replies did not recommend Basic. One said, "If your budget is less than $4k a day, then only target [Exact] match keywords," and a 2026 reply was direct: "Stop using Basic. It gives Apple full control over your bids and keywords."

Peter Sutarik, who sells the Sonar ASO tool (vendor), tested Basic on three utility apps in early 2026 with "a $500/month budget" and wrote, "Two of my three launches tested this way hit the target within a week." The catch: it "reported only campaign-level totals (no keywords, no Search Terms report)" ([Sonar](https://trysonar.app/blog/apple-search-ads-basic-vs-advanced)).

### What happened when people switched

The same Sonar author wrote that "moving from Basic to Advanced typically cut my blended CPI by 25-40% within a month," with the warning, "Don't keep both running for the same app in the same country" ([Sonar](https://trysonar.app/blog/apple-search-ads-basic-vs-advanced)). Treat the number as one vendor's experience, not a benchmark. The Under the Radar hosts, two experienced indie developers, were wary on launch day for the same reason: "because search ads basic does not offer that ability I do hesitate to recommend it," referring to search terms ([Under the Radar #109](https://podsearch.david-smith.org/episodes/1881)).

### When neither paid off

Some apps lose money on both. One developer with a free app and in-app purchases wrote, "Search Ads Basic is too expensive for my free app as the percentage of users purchasing in-app purchases is too low," and "Search Ads Advanced is also too expensive for my app as pricing campaign is based on cost-per-tap" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/726836)). Indie developer Matt Corey moved his $10 a day elsewhere: "I took the $10/day I was already spending on Apple and redirected it to Reddit," while still noting that "Apple SearchAd users are already looking to download an app, and are therefore high intent users" ([Matt Corey](https://mattcorey.substack.com/p/rethinking-my-indie-app-advertising)).

### What these stories add up to

| Story | Superapp Selfdrive lesson | Product | Result | What went wrong or right |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| "$0 spent in 3 weeks" | Superapp Selfdrive: agent reports delivery daily | Basic | Nothing spent | No search demand matched, no data to diagnose |
| 90 countries, $1,500 budget | Pick markets with real search demand | Basic | "usually sits at zero" | Budget cannot create searches |
| $11 of $200 spent | Judge volume, not just cost per install | Basic | About 20 installs at $0.50 | Possibly brand searches only |
| Forgotten Basic campaign | Keep every campaign visible in one report | Basic | Low CPI | Possibly only branded keywords |
| $1,300 to $2,000 mid-July | Set budgets at the start of the month | Basic | Stopped at $1,303.84 | About $700 unspent |
| Luca Redwood, 2018 | Paid apps with a clear name can win | Basic | £11.55 for 23 purchases | Early, US only, cheap auctions |
| page91, 2020 | Exact match beats broad in costly niches | Both | About $4 Basic vs $7 to $8 Advanced | Advanced set up with costly keywords |
| Sonar, 2026 (vendor) | Use Basic only as a quick demand test | Basic, then Advanced | Target hit in 2 of 3 tests | No keyword data until switching |
| Freemium app, 2023 | Judge on paying users | Both | Too expensive | Low paywall conversion |

## Mistakes That Waste Money on Basic

Superapp Selfdrive's rule is to judge every keyword on revenue after Apple's commission, and Basic makes that impossible. These are the mistakes that come up again and again.

| Mistake | Superapp Selfdrive's approach | Why it happens | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Paying for installs from your own name | Superapp Selfdrive: works in Advanced, where search terms are visible | Basic shows no search terms | Use Advanced and read the Search Terms report |
| Treating a low cost per install as a win | Judges keywords on revenue, not installs | Low CPI can mean tiny, brand-only volume | Look at total installs and paying users |
| Raising the budget mid-month and expecting more spend | Works within the budget you approve | Monthly budget rules and possible bugs | Set the Basic budget at the start of the month |
| Expecting a budget decrease to apply now | You can pause a campaign at any time | "Budget decrease changes take effect at the start of the next calendar month." | Pause instead of lowering if you need to stop now |
| Running Basic and Advanced together | Uses one Advanced account | "Only one ad for the same app is eligible per auction" | Pause Basic before starting Advanced |
| Forgetting a Basic promotion | Daily report on what is running | Basic is not visible in the Advanced manager | Check your Basic account, pause what you do not use |
| Optimizing a freemium app for installs | Judges keywords on proceeds | Basic only knows installs | Track trials and purchases per keyword in Advanced |
| Spending the $100 credit without learning anything | Tests keywords and pauses poor performers | Basic gives no keyword data | Spend the credit in Advanced and save the Search Terms report |

Apple adds a billing warning about the "running both" mistake: "it's possible that what appears to be a billing issue is actually an app promotion that was never paused" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/billing/0088-understand-invoices)).

## Mistakes to Avoid When You Move From Basic to Advanced

Superapp Selfdrive was built around one fact: most Apple Ads money is lost on Advanced, not Basic, because Advanced gives you enough rope to make every mistake below. Basic protects you from some of them by hiding the controls. When you switch, the protection goes, so here is what to watch for, each backed by a real story or by Apple's own rules.

| Mistake | Superapp Selfdrive's guardrail | What it costs | How to avoid it |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Leaving Basic running after you start Advanced | Superapp Selfdrive works from one Advanced account | Paying twice for the same searches, with no auction benefit | Pause Basic first; check your Basic account monthly |
| Broad match and Search Match in every campaign | Agent reviews search terms and prunes poor performers | Spend on unrelated or competitor searches | Exact match plus Search Match off in brand, category and competitor campaigns |
| No negative keywords | Agent pauses what is not working | The same bad search keeps spending | Add exact negatives from the Search Terms report every week |
| Age or gender audience settings | Your settings stay yours; keep them broad | Excludes users with Personalized Ads off and stops attribution payloads | Use customer type, not age or gender |
| Reading the daily budget as a daily cap | Works within the budget you approve | A single day can run far above it | Budget for daily budget times 30.4 |
| Judging on cost per install | Judges keywords on revenue | Cheap installs that never pay | Track cost per paying user on proceeds |
| Expanding to cheap countries | Asks you to approve markets | Cheap taps, few subscribers | Judge countries on paying users per $1,000 |
| Not defending your brand | Runs within the campaigns you approve | A competitor's ad above your own name | Run a small exact-match brand campaign |
| Leaving campaigns unwatched | Daily report | Keywords at full spend with no conversions | Weekly reviews, or an agent that reports daily |
| Using Maximize Conversions for a pre-order | Not stated | Apple says it is "designed for post-launch campaigns only" | Use Manage Bids before launch |
| Spending the $100 credit before setup | Tests keywords and pauses poor performers | A credit spent with nothing learned | Build campaigns, negatives and tracking first |
| Expecting ads to lift organic rank | Feeds converting keywords into your listing | Spend with no ranking gain | Track organic rank separately; improve metadata |

### Mistake 1: leaving Basic running

Apple is clear that running both gains you nothing: "There's no advantage in the auction for running both Apple Ads Basic and Advanced at the same time," and "Only one ad for the same app is eligible per auction" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/apple-ads-basic/0069-switch-apple-ads-solutions)). The trap is that you forget Basic exists. One marketing team only discovered an old Basic campaign by accident, "as it wasn't visible on the Advanced ads manager" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/742065)), and Apple's invoice help warns that "it's possible that what appears to be a billing issue is actually an app promotion that was never paused" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/billing/0088-understand-invoices)). Pause Basic the same day you launch Advanced, and Sonar's Peter Sutarik (a vendor) gives the same advice: "Don't keep both running for the same app in the same country" ([Sonar](https://trysonar.app/blog/apple-search-ads-basic-vs-advanced)).

### Mistake 2: copying Basic's automatic matching into broad match

Basic matches your ad to searches automatically. In Advanced, broad match and Search Match do something similar, but now you pay for every tap. Apple says broad match "is designed to run your ad for searches on relevant variants of your keyword and terms related to it," and Search Match uses "the metadata from your App Store listing, information about similar apps in the same genre, and other search data" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/campaigns/0006-understand-search-match)).

Andy G. of QuranWay learned this the expensive way: "Total media: $1,247. Installs: 3,142. Paid conversions: zero." Part of the spend came from broad match on a competitor name, which "means I was also paying for searches like "mawaqit alternative" and "mawaqit not working."" ([Medium](https://medium.com/@andy.a.g/i-spent-1-247-on-apple-search-ads-got-3-142-installs-and-zero-paid-conversions-b3a964a206c7)). Developer Jaxon Evans found his Bluesky app matching "Reddit, X, Discord and a few others - all matching the term Bluesky," and after "changing all search terms to "Exact", my current CPA is down to $2" ([Jaxon Evans](https://jaxonevans.leaflet.pub/3ma2h2hrsdk2h)). Subscription founder Ivan Sparrow's first rule: "First, always turn Search Match OFF in your main keyword campaigns" ([Sparrow Apps](https://sparrowapps.io/articles/apple-search-ads-guide/)).

Apple's own structure keeps automation in one place. For brand, category and competitor campaigns, "set keywords to the exact match type, make sure Search Match is off," and in the discovery campaign "you'll use broad match keywords and Search Match," then "add all the keywords from your brand, category, and competitor campaigns as exact match negative keywords" ([Apple Ads](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/best-practices/campaign-structure)). And remember: "Once they've been added, match type can't be changed" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/keywords/0059-understand-keyword-match-types)).

### Mistake 3: narrowing audiences the way you would on social ads

Facebook habits do not transfer. Apple warns that "Since 78% of search volume comes from devices with Personalized Ads off," changing audience settings "can significantly limit the number of customers who see your ad" ([Apple Ads](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/best-practices/ad-variations)). Worse, "when you apply age or gender refinements, you automatically exclude customers with Personalized Ads turned Off" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/ad-groups/0021-modify-audience-settings)), and "To ensure user privacy, payloads will not be returned for ad groups that use age or gender settings," so your attribution goes dark too. Customer type (new users, returning users) is the safe refinement.

### Mistake 4: treating the daily budget as a cap

Basic has a hard monthly budget. Advanced's daily budget is an average: "your monthly spend won't be more than your daily budget times the average number of days in a calendar month," calculated as 30.4 days ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/bids-and-budget/0016-manage-budgets)). One developer on Apple's forums wrote, "My daily cap is $45, and therefore I expect the daily amount to be around this number," then found "$225 were burned just in a single day" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/105426)). Nothing was broken; the month would still balance out. Plan cash flow on the monthly ceiling.

### Mistake 5: judging Advanced on cost per install, the Basic way

Basic trains you to watch cost per install, because that is all it shows. In Advanced you can do better, and you should. Michael Rode of fitness app GainFrame wrote, "A paying customer was costing me around $114 to acquire. The lifetime value of that customer was around $18" ([GainFrame](https://gainframe.app/blog/spent-5k-on-app-ads/)). Cal AI's Jake Castillo described the other half of the math: "Apple takes thirty percent of every subscription. So we weren't actually keeping the full subscription price. We were keeping seventy percent of it," and "We were losing money on every install, and we were scaling that loss as fast as we could spend" ([LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/jake-castillo_we-were-scaling-our-apple-search-ads-aggressively-activity-7468736090238005248-B2Nb)). Judge every keyword on cost per paying user against proceeds after Apple's commission.

### Mistake 6: expanding to the cheapest countries

Basic can run in every eligible country automatically ("you'll automatically be added to new markets as they're introduced"). Cheap countries look great on cost per install and poor on revenue. Adapty's analysis found that "Algeria's $0.18 download produces only 10 paying subscribers per $1,000; Nepal's cheap taps produce 3," while "The US delivers 15" and "The UK delivers 19" ([Adapty](https://adapty.io/blog/cheapest-and-most-expensive-countries-for-apple-ads/)). Add countries one at a time and judge each on paying users per $1,000 spent.

### Mistake 7: leaving your brand name undefended

Basic may serve mostly on your own name, which wastes money. The opposite mistake in Advanced is never bidding on your name at all. When Apple Search Ads launched, Threes co-creator Asher Vollmer wrote, "An ad for 2048 shows up at the top of the @AppStore when you search for "Threes" in iOS 10," and "This is exhausting" ([Michael Tsai](https://mjtsai.com/blog/2016/06/16/early-app-store-search-ads-fail/)). A developer on Apple's forums later complained that "another app can show up above our app when searching with our unique app name" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/73841)). Check the Search Terms report: if competitors bid on your name, a small exact-match brand campaign is cheap insurance.

### Mistake 8: setting it and forgetting it

Basic is built to be left alone. Advanced is not. An Indie Hackers developer managing "20+ apps" found a broad-match keyword "I'd meant to review" that "had been running at full spend the entire time, with near-zero conversions" ([Indie Hackers](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/i-manage-20-apps-on-the-app-store-apple-search-ads-was-eating-me-alive-so-i-built-my-own-fix-b8450bf26e)). Markets move too: "ASA was awesome in the beginning for me, but a competitor came out and way outbid me" ([Hacker News](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41778882)). This is the strongest case for an agent: the work is not hard, it is constant.

### Mistake 9: spending the $100 credit before you are ready

The credit is "a one-time new account credit," and "If you link a campaign group instead of your top-level account, the credit won't be applied" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/billing/0032-apple-ads-promo-credit)). Spent without structure, it teaches little. Developer Mykola Harmash wrote, "I basically wasted the whole credit because I have no idea how to run ads, 11K impressions and 33 installs" ([Threads](https://www.threads.com/@mykola.harmash/post/DDmpqULMrdP)). A price-tracking app developer told Indie Hustle, "I decided to ramp up the budget, and by doing so my whole $100 complementary budget was gone" ([Indie Hustle](https://www.indiehustle.co/p/hitting-80000-downloads-for-his-price)). Set up campaigns, negatives and revenue tracking first, then let the credit buy data.

### Mistake 10: expecting paid installs to lift organic rank

A developer on Apple's forums posted under the title "Spent $700 on search ads and rank went from 20 to 250+" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/842406)). A chess app developer wrote, "I have spent $1000s but am 20th for "chess" way behind lower rated apps" ([Apple Developer Forums](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/732348)). Ads do not reliably move organic rank. What does help is using what the ads teach you to improve your listing, which is the loop in the next section.

### Mistake 11: setup choices you cannot undo

Two Advanced account settings are permanent: "Note that once you set the time zone and currency for your account, you cannot change them" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/get-started/0004-set-up-an-account)), and "Note that you can select only one currency per account, and once it's set you can't change it" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/get-started/0030-set-your-payment-method)). Also, "Billing will be based on UTC, rather than the time zone you select." Pick the currency your revenue arrives in, and the time zone you read reports in.

## Can You Use Both, and How Do You Switch?

Superapp Selfdrive needs only an Advanced account, so if you have a Basic promotion running, pause it first. Apple allows both: "It's possible to use both Apple Ads Basic and Advanced," but "any optimizations you make in your Apple Ads Advanced campaigns won't be considered for Apple Ads Basic," "There's no advantage in the auction for running both Apple Ads Basic and Advanced at the same time," and "Only one ad for the same app is eligible per auction" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/apple-ads-basic/0069-switch-apple-ads-solutions)).

To switch from Basic to Advanced:

1. Note your Basic results: average cost per install, installs per month and the countries that spent.
 2. Pause the Basic promotion. "You'll still be able to access your account information for Apple Ads Basic" afterwards.
 3. Set up an Advanced account and link it to App Store Connect.
 4. Start with a brand campaign, a category campaign and a discovery campaign, or a single Maximize Conversions campaign if you do not want to manage bids.
 5. Use your Basic average cost per install as a first target, then adjust once you see cost per paying user.

Going the other way has a quirk: "If you begin creating an Apple Ads Advanced account and try to switch to Basic before you're done," you get an error, and you must finish the Advanced account and link it to App Store Connect first ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/get-started/0004-set-up-an-account)). Apple's pages do not describe moving from Advanced back to Basic in more detail.

## How to Set Up Apple Ads Basic, Step by Step

Superapp Selfdrive skips this, since it connects to an Advanced account. If you still want to run a Basic test yourself, this is the whole process, based on Apple's help pages.

1. **Check eligibility.** "you must have an app for iPhone or iPad currently on the App Store," and "Apple Accounts that use phone numbers only aren't accepted" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/get-started/0052-solve-setup-and-access-issues)).
 2. **Link App Store Connect.** "You must be assigned the Admin, Legal, App Manager, or Marketing role" to link accounts, and "It can take up to 24 hours for your app to appear when you create a campaign."
 3. **Choose the app.** You can only promote apps from your linked account, up to 50.
 4. **Choose countries.** Basic shows only the countries where your app is eligible. Selecting all of them means you are added to new markets automatically, which is convenient but makes cost control harder.
 5. **Set a monthly budget.** Up to "$10,000 (U.S.) per app, per month." Set it at the start of the month, since decreases only apply next month.
 6. **Set a max cost per install.** Apple suggests one; Apple also says its suggestions are "not a directive for where you should set your max CPI" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/apple-ads-basic/0068-make-changes-to-basic-app-promotions)).
 7. **Add a payment method.** "Apple Ads accepts Visa, Mastercard (including Apple Card), and American Express," and "you may have only one active payment method at a time for your account" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/get-started/0030-set-your-payment-method)).
 8. **Check your first three screenshots.** The ad uses them, so they are your creative.
 9. **Wait and check.** If nothing delivers, Apple's advice is "try raising your max CPI to increase the likelihood of your ad being shown," and "Consider running your app promotion in all the countries and regions where your app is available" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/apple-ads-basic/0045-improve-basic-app-promotion-results)).

## How to Set Up Apple Ads Advanced, Step by Step

Superapp Selfdrive does steps 4 to 10 for you after you connect your account and approve markets and budget. On your own:

1. **Create the account.** "Click the Get Started button to set up an Apple Ads Advanced account" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/get-started/0004-set-up-an-account)).
 2. **Pick currency and time zone carefully.** Both are permanent.
 3. **Link App Store Connect** at the top-level account, so you receive the $100 credit if eligible.
 4. **Plan Apple's four campaigns:** "Include four campaign types in your account: Brand, category, competitor, and discovery" ([Apple Ads](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/best-practices/campaign-structure)).
 5. **Choose one or two markets first.** "Choose one or more countries or regions where your campaign will run on the App Store" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/campaigns/0005-create-campaigns)).
 6. **Pick a bid strategy.** Manage Bids to "set a maximum cost-per-tap (max CPT) bid for your ad group," or Maximize Conversions to "set a target cost-per-acquisition (target CPA)."
 7. **Set daily budgets** with the 30.4-day monthly ceiling in mind.
 8. **Add keywords** in exact match for brand, category and competitor campaigns, and leave broad match and Search Match to discovery.
 9. **Add negatives** so discovery does not compete with your exact campaigns.
 10. **Connect revenue data** so you can judge keywords on paying users, not installs.
 11. **Review weekly:** move converting search terms into exact campaigns, block the rest, and adjust bids.

| Setup step | Superapp Selfdrive | Basic | Advanced |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Connect accounts | Superapp Selfdrive: you connect Apple Ads and App Store Connect | Link App Store Connect | Link App Store Connect |
| Choose markets | You approve them | Countries, or all eligible | Countries per campaign |
| Budget | You approve it | Monthly, up to $10,000 | Daily, averaged over the month |
| Bids | Agent sets them within your budget | Max cost per install | Max cost per tap or target CPA |
| Keywords | Agent researches and tests | None | You choose them |
| Creative | Your product page and custom product pages | First three screenshots | Default ad plus custom product pages |
| Ongoing work | Daily report, approvals | Almost none | Weekly reviews at least |

## Apple's Recommended Campaign Structure for Advanced

Superapp Selfdrive's advice is to "Keep campaigns organized around the app, target market and search intent," and "Selfdrive proposes a structure for your app and reports which parts are working" ([Selfdrive Apple Ads](https://superapp.dev/selfdrive/apple-ads)). Apple's own recommendation is four campaign types.

| Campaign | Superapp Selfdrive | What Apple says it is for | Match type |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Brand | Superapp Selfdrive: proposes a structure for your app | Searches for your app or company name | Exact, Search Match off |
| Category | Kept as a separate keyword theme | Generic searches for what your app does | Exact, Search Match off |
| Competitor | Kept as a separate keyword theme | "keywords for apps that are similar to yours, within the same or a related app category" | Exact, Search Match off |
| Discovery | Discovery tests kept visible | "reaching a wider audience and mining for popular search terms to add as keywords" | Broad match and Search Match |

Source: [Apple Ads campaign structure](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/best-practices/campaign-structure).

Why this matters for Basic users: Basic is, in effect, one big discovery campaign you cannot see into. The four-campaign structure splits your spend by intent, so you can see that brand searches convert cheaply, competitor searches cost more, and discovery finds new keywords to promote into exact-match campaigns.

## Turning Your Basic Numbers Into Advanced Targets

Superapp Selfdrive uses your revenue, not Basic's install numbers, as the target. If you are switching on your own, your Basic results still give you a starting point.

| Basic number | Superapp Selfdrive | What it means | How to use it in Advanced |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Average cost per install | Superapp Selfdrive: a starting point; the agent then moves to revenue | What Apple paid per install on your behalf | First target CPA in Maximize Conversions |
| Installs per month | Used to size the first budget | Your search volume at that price | Budget for at least five conversions a day |
| Countries that spent | Markets you approve | Where search demand exists | Launch Advanced in those countries first |
| Countries that never spent | Skipped unless you approve them | Little matching search demand | Leave them out at first |
| Monthly spend | Your approved budget | Your real demand at that bid | Daily budget = monthly spend divided by 30.4 |

A simple conversion: Advanced charges per tap, so cost per install equals cost per tap divided by conversion rate. If Basic paid $2.00 per install and your product page converts 50% of taps, a max cost per tap around $1.00 is the break-even equivalent. Raise it only for keywords that bring paying users.

## Apple Ads Basic vs Advanced Cost

Superapp Selfdrive does not change what Apple charges: "Apple bills ad spend separately from Selfdrive's Superapp credit usage" ([Selfdrive Apple Ads](https://superapp.dev/selfdrive/apple-ads)), and Selfdrive is included in Superapp Max at $100 a month. Apple charges nothing to use either product. You pay only for ads, and "Apple Ads doesn't charge fees for credit card transactions" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/get-started/0030-set-your-payment-method)).

The real cost difference is what you pay for. Basic charges per install, so you never pay for a tap that does not install. Advanced charges per tap, so your product page conversion rate decides your cost per install. Apple says ads at the top of search results deliver "more than a 60 percent average conversion rate" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/ad-placements/0082-search-results)), so a $1.50 tap at 60% conversion is about $2.50 per install.

| Cost question | Superapp Selfdrive | Apple Ads Basic | Apple Ads Advanced |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Fee to use | Superapp Selfdrive: included in Superapp Max ($100 a month) | Free | Free |
| You pay Apple for | Taps | Installs | Taps |
| Maximum spend | Budget you approve | $10,000 a month per app | No cap |
| Minimum spend | None published | None published | None published |
| Billing | Apple bills your account | Every $500 or seven days | Every $500 or seven days, or invoicing if approved |
| $100 credit | Yes, if your new account is eligible | Yes, if eligible | Yes, if eligible |

### The $100 credit

Both products advertise the credit: "Try Apple Ads for free with a 100 USD credit" ([Apple Ads Basic](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/basic)). It is "a one-time new account credit," and "you must link your Apple Ads account to an App Store Connect account to receive the promo credit," with one trap: "If you link a campaign group instead of your top-level account, the credit won't be applied" ([Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/billing/0032-apple-ads-promo-credit)). Spend it where you learn the most. Castro's developers spent their credit in the early Advanced days and learned their break-even point: "14 went on to buy Castro, that's a Conversion Rate of 12.84% and a CPA of $7.14," which was "more than twice the revenue we generate from a sale" ([Supertop](https://cur.at/IzUz9w9?m=web)).

## Which Should You Choose? By App and Situation

Superapp Selfdrive fits any situation where you want Advanced but do not have time to manage it. Otherwise, this table gives the honest pick.

| Your situation | Superapp Selfdrive | Pick on your own | Why |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Subscription app | Superapp Selfdrive: runs Advanced and judges on revenue | Advanced | You need to know which searches bring paying users |
| Freemium app with in-app purchases | Judges keywords on proceeds | Advanced | Installs alone can lose money |
| Paid app with a distinctive name | Works from Advanced search terms | Basic for a test, then Advanced | Basic can work, but may serve mostly on your name |
| Pre-order app | Not stated | Advanced with Manage Bids | Maximize Conversions does not support pre-orders |
| More than $10,000 a month per app | Runs within your budget | Advanced | Basic caps at $10,000 |
| More than 50 apps | Covers apps in your account | Advanced | Basic allows up to 50 |
| No time at all, small test budget | Runs it for you | Basic or Maximize Conversions | Maximize Conversions keeps the data |
| You want to improve ASO | Feeds ad keywords into your listing | Advanced | Basic has "No keyword data" |
| You use an agency or a tool | Connects to your Advanced account | Advanced | Basic has no API |
| You need invoicing | Uses your Advanced billing | Advanced | Line of credit is Advanced only |

### Decide in four questions

1. Does your app make money after the install (subscriptions or purchases)? If yes, choose Advanced or Selfdrive.
 2. Do you want to know which searches brought your users? If yes, choose Advanced or Selfdrive.
 3. Will you spend more than $10,000 a month per app, or promote more than 50 apps? If yes, choose Advanced.
 4. Do you have less than an hour a week? If yes, choose Selfdrive, or a Maximize Conversions campaign, before Basic.

## The ASO and Apple Ads Loop: Why It Is Routine Work an AI Agent Does Better

Superapp Selfdrive is built on a loop that Basic cannot run at all: Apple Ads shows which searches turn into installs and paying users, those keywords go into your App Store listing, a better listing makes your ads cheaper, and the cycle repeats. Selfdrive "Runs search ads within your budget, then uses the results to improve your listing for organic traffic," and its ASO agent "Uses proprietary keyword data and Apple Ads results to find keywords that get you free organic traffic" ([Selfdrive](https://superapp.dev/selfdrive)). This is the biggest practical reason to choose Advanced over Basic, because Basic has "No keyword data," so there is nothing to feed back into your listing.

### How the loop works

The idea is old and well tested. In 2017, Choice of Games' Dan Fabulich wrote, "Like Google Adwords, Apple's Search Ads allow you to buy keywords for searches on the App Store," so "Then set a reasonable budget, buy those terms, and see which ones convert best," because "they can tell you which terms to directly incorporate into your limited-space keywords list," and "Then, if you're lucky and good, you can start ranking for those terms organically" ([Hacker News](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15187149)).

Consultant Thomas Petit puts both directions in one line: "ASA can inform how to improve ASO, and ASO edits can boost your ASA performance" ([RevenueCat](https://www.revenuecat.com/blog/growth/apple-search-ads-guide)). He calls Apple Ads "the only channel providing deep keyword & store behavioural data," and says that in his experience "Apple was by far the channel which had the biggest impact on organic, 50% higher than Facebook Ads" ([SplitMetrics](https://splitmetrics.com/blog/app-growth-talks-thomas-petit-on-apple-search-ads/)).

The return path works through relevance. AppTweak (a vendor) explains that "Apple will look at your app metadata to determine whether a keyword you bid on is relevant to your app," so "an app page that follows best ASO practices and includes highly relevant keywords will help lower your bids" ([AppTweak](https://www.apptweak.com/en/aso-blog/apple-search-ads-keywords-tips-tactics-and-strategies)). Petit adds the conversion side: "if your conversion rate is low in the store this is like making your position in the auction unsustainable" ([Singular](https://www.singular.net/thomas-petit-on-aso-conversion-optimization-and-why-vo-and-troas-dont-really-work-for-subscription-apps/)).

| Step | Superapp Selfdrive | What happens | Source of the rule |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1. Find candidate keywords | Superapp Selfdrive: "The agent researches search terms relevant to your app" | Brainstorm and research terms people use to find apps like yours | Apple: "Consider the search terms someone may use to find your type of app." |
| 2. Test them in Apple Ads | Tests new terms within your budget | Buy the terms and see which convert | Fabulich: "buy those terms, and see which ones convert best" |
| 3. Keep the winners, cut the rest | "It pauses poor performers, explains the decision and proposes the next test in your daily report." | Raise bids on winners, add losers as negatives | Apple: "add non-performers as negative keywords" |
| 4. Move winners into your listing | "A revised subtitle and keyword field are drafted, with an explanation of the changes." | Title, subtitle and keyword field get the converting terms | Apple: 30-character name and subtitle, 100-character keyword field |
| 5. Approve and ship | "Nothing is submitted as an approved listing update until you accept it." | Metadata goes out with a new app version | Apple: "You can update your subtitle when submitting a new version of your app" |
| 6. Wait for rankings | "A daily report does not mean a daily metadata change." | Rankings settle over weeks | Apptamin: "4 weeks is usually the time needed for keyword rankings to stabilize" |
| 7. Measure and adjust ads | "Compare available App Store Connect metrics before and after an update" | Lower bids on terms you now rank for; test new terms | AppFollow: "Monitor the balance between organic and paid downloads, especially for brand-related terms." |
| 8. Repeat per country | Markets you approve | Same loop for each market and language | Bondar: 29 locales, about 10 months for one full pass |

### The App Store limits that make the loop matter

Your listing has very little room, which is why knowing which words convert is valuable. "An app name can be up to 30 characters long," "A subtitle can be up to 30 characters long," and "Keywords are limited to 100 characters total, with terms separated by commas and no spaces" ([Apple Developer](https://developer.apple.com/app-store/product-page), [Apple Developer](https://developer.apple.com/app-store/search)). App Store Connect describes the same field as "You can provide up to 100 bytes of content" ([App Store Connect Help](https://developer.apple.com/help/app-store-connect/reference/app-information/platform-version-information)), so non-English languages can fit fewer characters.

Apple ranks search results on "text relevance" ("matches for your app's title, subtitle, keywords, and primary category") "as well as user behavior (downloads, ratings and reviews, and more)" ([Apple Developer](https://developer.apple.com/app-store/search)). Apple also advises you to "Consider the trade-off between ranking well for less common terms versus ranking lower for popular terms," which is exactly the trade-off Apple Ads data lets you measure instead of guess.

Custom product pages connect the two sides directly. "You can publish up to 70 additional versions of your product page on the App Store for iPhone and iPad," "Custom product pages can also appear in relevant search results," and "You can also assign keywords to your custom product page to make them even more discoverable." Apple says "Developers see a 2.5 percentage point increase on average when referring people to a custom product page" ([Apple Developer](https://developer.apple.com/app-store/custom-product-pages)).

### One founder's loop, by hand

Ukrainian developer Oleksandr Bondar described running this loop manually for his baby-tracker app Malyatko across 29 localizations ([DOU](https://dou.ua/forums/topic/61687/)). In summary, he uses Apple Ads as a research tool, not only an acquisition channel. He goes two to three countries a month on a $300 to $400 budget. For each country he lists every search combination someone might use, runs an exact-match campaign with them for a month, checks which competitors hold those words in their title and subtitle, and then rewrites his title, subtitle and keywords for that language. Rankings take four to eight weeks to settle after each change, and he estimates the full pass over 29 locales at about ten months and $2,000 to $3,000. He spends about $350 a month on Apple Ads and earns about $150 from it directly; the value is in what it teaches his listing.

That is the loop working. It is also a clear picture of the problem: one founder, ten months, the same five steps repeated 29 times.

### Why this is routine work

Every step above is a check repeated on a schedule. Apple's guidance is to "Check individual keyword performance regularly to determine which terms are performing well and which aren't," to "Monitor results and identify high-performing search terms, then move them to campaigns or ad groups," and, once campaigns run, "you might find you need to add to your negative keyword list, or cut back" ([Apple Ads](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/best-practices/keywords), [Apple Ads Help](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/help/keywords/0060-use-negative-keywords)). Petit describes the job the same way: "Navigate between scale and performance by revisiting your bids regularly," and "Implement regular small tweaks to find the right balance between scale and performance" ([RevenueCat](https://www.revenuecat.com/blog/growth/apple-search-ads-guide)).

| Task | Superapp Selfdrive | How often, done by hand | Why it is easy to drop |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Check spend and pacing | Superapp Selfdrive: morning email with spend and campaign results | Daily | Takes minutes, so it gets skipped |
| Read search terms and add negatives | Reviews keywords as part of recurring work | At least weekly | Hundreds of rows in a report |
| Adjust bids on winners and losers | "Agent reviews bids, keywords and performance." | Weekly | Needs enough data per keyword to judge |
| Move converting terms to exact campaigns | Tests new terms, retires weak ones | Weekly to monthly | Easy to postpone |
| Judge keywords on revenue | Superapp data or App Store Connect | Weekly to monthly | Revenue sits in a different tool |
| Update listing keywords | Drafts title, subtitle and keyword field for approval | About monthly | Needs a new app version |
| Check organic rank after a change | Compares metrics before and after | Weeks after each change | Results arrive long after the change |
| Repeat per country and language | Markets you approve | Every market | Multiplies everything above |

Vendors who sell automation agree on the cadence. AppTweak recommends checks "At least weekly, though daily checks may be needed for aggressive campaigns," and warns that across many markets "managing everything manually becomes a full-time job" ([AppTweak](https://www.apptweak.com/en/aso-blog/apple-ads-automation-guide)). Apptamin, an ASO agency, says that for the App Store "the general consensus is that updates need to be made monthly (roughly every 4 weeks)" ([Apptamin](https://www.apptamin.com/blog/how-often-should-you-update-your-apps-aso-metadata/)).

### What happens when a person runs the loop

People do not fail at this because it is hard. They fail because it never stops. An Indie Hackers founder with "Twenty-something apps. All on the App Store. All running Apple Search Ads" wrote that his daily check "On a good day this took an hour," that "I was holding too much in my head," and that "I dropped things constantly." One keyword "had been running at full spend the entire time, with near-zero conversions," and he concluded, "The operation was too spread out for any human to track manually without dropping something" ([Indie Hackers](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/i-manage-20-apps-on-the-app-store-apple-search-ads-was-eating-me-alive-so-i-built-my-own-fix-b8450bf26e)). He went on to build his own tool, so read this as a founder with a fix to sell, but the pattern is common.

A SplitMetrics case study (a vendor) on photo product company Pixum reports management time going "From at least 10 hours of work per week" "to about 2-4 hours per week" after automation, "while keeping their ROAS at the same positive level" ([SplitMetrics](https://splitmetrics.com/cases/pixum-apple-search-ads-optimization/)). That was rule-based automation, not an AI agent, and still most of the time went away.

### Why an AI agent is better at the routine than a person

Superapp Selfdrive's view is simple: strategy belongs to you, and the routine belongs to the agent. Here is where an agent beats a person on this kind of work.

| Quality | Superapp Selfdrive (AI agent) | A person doing it by hand |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Consistency | Superapp Selfdrive: keywords are "reviewed as part of the agent's recurring work when performance data is available" | Reviews slip on busy weeks |
| Coverage | Reviews keywords across every market you approve | Skims the top rows |
| Memory | Its reports "show what changed and why" | "I was holding too much in my head." |
| Working hours | "the marketing tasks it did autonomously at night" | Office hours, when there is time |
| Connecting ads to ASO | Same agent sees ad results and drafts listing changes | Two tools, two jobs, often two people |
| Patience | Waits, because "a new keyword needs enough data to judge" | Reacts to one bad day |
| Judgment on revenue | Reads Superapp or App Store Connect revenue | Revenue in another dashboard |
| Strategy and taste | Proposes; you approve direction, markets and budget | You decide what the app is and who it is for |

Even vendors of rule engines make the same point. AppTweak says "automation executes rules relentlessly and without bias," while "human oversight is crucial for strategy, creative testing, and setting the right goals" ([AppTweak](https://www.apptweak.com/en/aso-blog/apple-ads-automation-guide)). AppTweak also warns, "don't make bid decisions on keywords with fewer than 20 taps, or you risk reacting to noise," which is the kind of rule people break on a bad day and an agent does not.

To be clear about the evidence: there is no independent controlled study showing AI agents beat skilled human managers on Apple Ads results. Apple's own only number for its automated bidding is one advertiser's quote, "With Maximize Conversions, I was able to get over 30 percent more installs with the same budget" ([Apple Ads](https://ads.apple.com/app-store/best-practices/maximize-conversions)). The case for an agent is not that it is smarter than an expert. It is that the loop is a long list of small, repeated checks across keywords, countries and languages, and an agent does every one of them, every time, without getting bored, busy or behind.

### How Selfdrive runs the loop, with your approval

Selfdrive splits the loop into what it can do on its own and what waits for you. On ads: "Within that approval, Selfdrive can manage bids and keywords without asking about every adjustment" ([Selfdrive](https://superapp.dev/selfdrive)). On your listing: "The agent proposes metadata changes with a reason for each recommendation," "The proposal shows the exact fields being changed," and "Nothing is submitted as an approved listing update until you accept it" ([Selfdrive ASO](https://superapp.dev/selfdrive/aso)). It "can draft supported text metadata, including the app name, subtitle, keyword field and description," and "Recommendations should match your app's actual purpose rather than simply chasing popular words."

Every morning, "Superapp sends you one email," and "The morning email summarizes App Store Connect analytics, downloads, ad spend and campaign results" ([Selfdrive](https://superapp.dev/selfdrive)). It is honest about limits too: "Keyword research does not guarantee a rank or a number of downloads," "Screenshot production is not included in this ASO workflow," and "Apple Ads does not run in every country." The organic side costs no ad money: "There is no advertising spend required for an organic listing update," while "ASO agent work uses Superapp credits."

| Loop step | Superapp Selfdrive | Who approves |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Research keywords | Superapp Selfdrive: researches terms and reviews your connected data | Nobody; it is research |
| Bids and keyword tests | Manages within your approved campaign | Covered by your budget approval |
| Pause poor performers | Pauses and explains in the daily report | Covered by your budget approval |
| Draft listing changes | Drafts title, subtitle, keyword field, description | You, before anything is submitted |
| Submit the update | Submits only what you accept | You |
| Report results | Morning email and daily report | You read it |

### The loop with Basic, Advanced and Selfdrive

| Loop step | Superapp Selfdrive | Apple Ads Basic | Apple Ads Advanced (by hand) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| See which searches convert | Superapp Selfdrive: yes, from Advanced data | No, "No keyword data" | Yes, Search Terms report |
| Test specific keywords | Yes | No keywords | Yes |
| Judge on revenue | Yes | Installs only | If you connect revenue data |
| Feed winners into your listing | Drafts the change for approval | Nothing to feed | You copy them by hand |
| Lower bids where you now rank | Adjusts bids as results come in | Not possible | You, if you remember |
| Repeat per country | Markets you approve | All eligible countries, blind | You, per market |
| Time per week | Reading the daily report and approving | Almost none | Hours, growing with markets |

## How Selfdrive Runs Apple Ads Advanced for You

As a disclosure, Superapp is our product, so weigh this accordingly. Selfdrive's Apple Ads agent describes itself as "Apple Search Ads on autopilot." It works on your own account: "Connect an Apple Ads account that can advertise your app and has billing configured," plus "App Store Connect access for app analytics, plus an approved campaign budget and target markets" ([Selfdrive Apple Ads](https://superapp.dev/selfdrive/apple-ads)).

What it does: "Selfdrive runs your Apple Search Ads campaigns for you: it picks keywords, sets bids within your budget," "and pauses what isn't working." "Then it uses the results to improve your App Store listing," "so the keywords that work in ads bring you organic traffic too." You stay in charge of the money: "You approve the campaign direction, markets and budget," and "Selfdrive does not authorize an increase beyond the budget you set."

How it measures results: for apps built in Superapp, Selfdrive uses Superapp's own revenue data; for any other App Store app, it reads revenue directly from App Store Connect analytics, so you do not need RevenueCat or an attribution tool to judge keywords on revenue. That is the gap Basic leaves open, since Basic only knows installs. Selfdrive is also honest about limits: "A bid or an install is not a guarantee of revenue," and "Apple uses an average daily budget, so a single day can vary."

| Task | Superapp Selfdrive | Basic (you) | Advanced (you) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Keyword research | Superapp Selfdrive: agent researches and tests | Not possible | You |
| Bids | Agent, within your budget | Apple, up to your max CPI | You, or Maximize Conversions |
| Pausing losers | Agent reviews and pauses | Not possible per keyword | You |
| Revenue tracking | Superapp data or App Store Connect | Not available | You connect it |
| ASO from ad data | Yes, through Selfdrive ASO | No keyword data | You copy keywords by hand |
| Daily report | Yes | Monthly dashboard | Reports you build |

Selfdrive is in beta and is included in the Superapp Max plan: "Selfdrive is included in the Max plan, $100/month, with 230 credits a month" ([Selfdrive](https://superapp.dev/selfdrive)). It is not right for you if you only advertise outside the App Store, or if you want to set every bid yourself. ## Apple Ads Basic vs Advanced: Pick It or Skip It

| Option | Superapp Selfdrive first | Pick it if | Skip it if |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Superapp Selfdrive | Yes | You want Advanced results without managing keywords and bids | You want to set every bid yourself |
| Apple Ads Basic | n/a | You want a hands-off demand test with a small budget | Your app earns from subscriptions or purchases, or you want keyword data |
| Advanced, Maximize Conversions | n/a | You want Apple to bid but still see the data | Your app is in pre-order, or you need exact keyword control |
| Advanced, Manage Bids | n/a | You want full control and have time each week | You cannot check campaigns at least weekly |

## What Changed in Apple Ads in 2025 and 2026

Superapp Selfdrive runs on Advanced, which is where Apple has added nearly every new feature. These changes affect the Basic vs Advanced choice:

| Date | Change | Effect on Basic vs Advanced |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Now | Superapp Selfdrive runs Advanced campaigns for you | Advanced control without managing keywords and bids |
| April 14, 2025 | Apple Search Ads renamed Apple Ads | Same two products, new name |
| Early 2026 | Ads can appear lower in search results | Advanced reports first position and all positions impression share |
| February 25, 2026 | Maximize Conversions launched | Advanced now has an automated option like Basic |
| March 17, 2026 | Insights analytics launched | More reporting, marketed for Advanced |
| June 8, 2026 | Custom creative assets announced as coming soon | Images and video for Today tab and search results ads |

## Frequently Asked Questions

**What is the difference between Apple Ads Basic and Advanced?**
Superapp Selfdrive runs Advanced for you. Basic charges per install, runs only in search results, has no keywords and caps spend at $10,000 a month per app; Advanced charges per tap, runs in four placements and gives you keywords, audiences and full reports.

**Is Apple Ads Basic worth it?**
Rarely, beyond a first test. Superapp Selfdrive and Apple's own Maximize Conversions both automate bidding while keeping keyword data, which Basic never shows.

**Is Apple Ads Basic cheaper than Advanced?**
Not reliably. Superapp Selfdrive judges cost per paying user, not per install; some developers paid less per install on Basic, while others found Basic served mainly on their own app name.

**Does Apple Ads Basic use keywords?**
No. Superapp Selfdrive and Advanced use keywords; Basic has "No keywords or audience settings" and "No keyword data."

**What is the Apple Ads Basic budget limit?**
Superapp Selfdrive uses the budget you approve. Basic allows "Up to $10,000 (U.S.) per app, per month"; Advanced has no cap.

**Can I use Apple Ads Basic and Advanced at the same time?**
Yes, but there is no benefit. Superapp Selfdrive uses one Advanced account, and Apple says "There's no advantage in the auction for running both Apple Ads Basic and Advanced at the same time."

**How do I switch from Apple Ads Basic to Advanced?**
Pause the Basic promotion, set up an Advanced account and link it to App Store Connect. Superapp Selfdrive can then run the Advanced campaigns, or you can start with Maximize Conversions.

**Is there a minimum budget for Apple Ads Basic or Advanced?**
Apple publishes no minimum for either. Superapp Selfdrive suggests starting with a budget you can afford to test; Apple recommends enough for at least five conversions a day in Maximize Conversions.

**Why is my Apple Ads Basic campaign not spending?**
Usually there are too few relevant searches, not a low bid. Superapp Selfdrive reports delivery daily; in Basic, check that your budget was not used up, because the status stays "Running" until the next month.

**Does Apple Ads Basic show ads for my own app name?**
It can, and you cannot check. Advanced shows brand searches in its Search Terms report, which Superapp Selfdrive works from; developers on Apple's forums found their Basic ad only when searching their own app name.

**Does the $100 Apple Ads credit work on Basic and Advanced?**
Both product pages advertise it. Superapp Selfdrive works with your own account; the credit is a one-time new account credit that needs your Apple Ads account linked to App Store Connect.

**What is Maximize Conversions, and is it better than Basic?**
For most apps, yes. Superapp Selfdrive is the agent option; Maximize Conversions is an Advanced strategy that bids toward a target cost per install using Search Match, while keeping Advanced reports and negative keywords.

**Can third-party tools manage Apple Ads Basic?**
No. Superapp Selfdrive and other tools need Advanced, because Basic has "No keyword data or access to the Apple Ads Platform API."

**Which ad placements does Apple Ads Basic use?**
Only App Store search results. Superapp Selfdrive and Advanced can also use the Today tab, the Search tab and product pages.

**How many apps can I promote with Apple Ads Basic?**
Up to 50. Superapp Selfdrive works with apps in your Advanced account, which has no app limit.

**When should I choose Apple Ads Basic?**
When you want a quick, hands-off demand test and do not care which searches drove installs. Superapp Selfdrive is the option if you want hands-off running with the data kept.

**Is Apple Ads Advanced hard to use?**
It takes time each week. Superapp Selfdrive does that work for you; doing it yourself means reading search terms, adding negatives and adjusting bids regularly.

**Does Apple Ads Basic report revenue?**
No. Superapp Selfdrive reads revenue from Superapp data or App Store Connect; Basic reports installs, spend and average cost per install only.

**What is the ASO and Apple Ads loop?**
Superapp Selfdrive runs it for you: Apple Ads shows which searches convert, those keywords go into your title, subtitle and keyword field, and a more relevant listing makes your ads cheaper.

**Can Apple Ads Basic help my ASO?**
No. Superapp Selfdrive uses Advanced data for ASO, because Basic has "No keyword data," so it cannot tell you which searches to put in your listing.

**Is an AI agent better than doing Apple Ads by hand?**
At the routine, yes. Superapp Selfdrive reviews keywords on every recurring pass and never forgets a campaign; you still set strategy, markets and budget, and no independent study yet compares agents with expert managers on results.

**How often should I update my App Store keywords from Apple Ads data?**
About monthly. Superapp Selfdrive drafts changes for your approval; one ASO agency says rankings usually need about four weeks to stabilize after a change.

**How much time does Apple Ads Advanced take each week?**
It depends on markets and keywords. Superapp Selfdrive reduces it to reading a daily report and approving; one vendor case study cut manual work from at least 10 hours a week to 2 to 4.

**What is the biggest mistake when switching from Basic to Advanced?**
Copying Basic's automatic matching with broad match and Search Match everywhere. Superapp Selfdrive prunes poor performers; on your own, use exact match outside discovery and add negatives weekly.

**Should I use age or gender targeting in Apple Ads Advanced?**
Usually not. Superapp Selfdrive leaves this to your settings; Apple says age or gender settings exclude users with Personalized Ads off and stop attribution payloads.

**Can I change my Apple Ads currency or time zone later?**
No. Superapp Selfdrive works with the account you have; Apple says once set, the time zone and currency cannot be changed.

**Does Selfdrive change my App Store listing without asking?**
No. Superapp Selfdrive says "Nothing is submitted as an approved listing update until you accept it."

**Does Selfdrive make screenshots or custom product pages?**
Superapp Selfdrive says "Screenshot production is not included in this ASO workflow," and its pages do not describe building custom product pages.
