How App Store name availability works

App Store app names must be unique: as of October 2026, Apple lets a name be used by only one app per localization, according to App Store Connect help.

30 character limit. App Store app names are limited to 30 characters under App Review Guideline 2.3.7, which also bans prices, trademarked terms, popular app names and irrelevant phrases in the name.

No public availability checker. Apple has no public tool that says whether an app name is free. The only definitive test is creating the app record in App Store Connect, which also holds the name for your account.

Unreleased apps count. App Store Connect rejects a name already used by any app record, including apps that are reserved but not live. The Superapp name checker searches App Store listings on the web, so it only sees live apps that are indexed.

Brand word first. App Store search results usually cut names off around 26 characters, so the brand word should come first.

Google Play is different. Google Play also limits titles to 30 characters in its metadata policy, but Google Play titles don’t have to be unique.

How to reserve an app name in App Store Connect

You reserve an App Store app name by creating its app record in App Store Connect, in four steps.

  1. Join the Apple Developer Program

App Store Connect only creates app records for paid Apple Developer Program members.

  2. Register a bundle ID

Add an explicit bundle ID such as com.yourname.drift in Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles.

  3. Create the app record

In App Store Connect choose Apps, the add button, then New App. Enter the platform, name, primary language, bundle ID and SKU.

  4. Keep the record

Once App Store Connect accepts the name, the record holds it for your account. You can still edit the name until you submit the app to App Review.

Field rules are in Apple’s app information reference.

What to do if your app name is taken

If your app name is taken, keep the brand word and make the full name unique.

Add a keyword. “Drift” may be taken while “Drift: Habit Tracker” is not. The checker suggests eight alternatives in this pattern whenever a name is in use.

Pick a new brand word. If the brand word itself belongs to a well-known app, a new word avoids review and search confusion.

Claim a trademark. If you hold the trademark, Apple takes claims through its app name notices form.
