What makes a good iPhone app icon
A good iPhone app icon is simple, square and opaque, following Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines.
One idea. A good iOS app icon shows a single, recognizable subject. Simple shapes stay legible at Spotlight and Settings sizes.
Square and unmasked. Design on a square 1024 x 1024 px canvas. iOS applies the rounded corners, so pre-rounded corners look jagged.
Opaque background. Fill the canvas edge to edge. The App Store icon cannot contain transparency.
Text only when essential. Apple recommends text only when it is essential to the brand, because text becomes unreadable at small sizes.
No added effects. Skip your own shadows, glows and bevels. iOS adds depth and Liquid Glass highlights automatically.
Works in every appearance. Check the icon in dark and tinted mode. The system generates those variants if you don’t supply them.
