Prices and limits are from each vendor's own page, checked on October 25, 2026, except where we cite AI Icon Creator's October 2026 test because a vendor's page was silent or blocked. Rank reflects how close each tool gets you to an icon you can ship in the App Store and Google Play; it is our editorial judgment, not a lab benchmark.
What Is an AI App Icon Generator?
An AI app icon generator turns a text description such as "a meditation app, calm moon over water" into a square icon, and the good ones also export every size Xcode and Android Studio need. In 2026 the label covers four kinds of tool, and the differences matter more than the image quality.
| Type | Tools | What you get | What you still do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free app icon generator with export pack | Superapp, appicon.co, Sleek | Icon options plus a ZIP of store sizes | Pick, test at small sizes, upload |
| Paid app icon generator with export pack | AI Icon Creator, Appicons.ai, IconikAI, Appy Pie, AppIconKitchen | Icon, edits and a full pack, sometimes SVG or variants | Watch credit use and licensing |
| General AI image tool | Adobe Firefly, ChatGPT Images, Midjourney, Canva | A single image, often beautiful | Crop, simplify, resize and export yourself |
| Icon set and finishing tools | Recraft, Apple Icon Composer | A matching set, or a layered Liquid Glass icon | Bring your own artwork or export pack |
A simple test tells you which type you need. If you want to upload something today, use a generator with an export pack. If you want a distinctive concept and will polish it, start in a general image tool. If you need ten icons in one style for a website or a tab bar, use Recraft. If you are finishing a layered Liquid Glass icon, use Icon Composer.
What changed for app icons in 2026
Apple redesigned icons around Liquid Glass. Its Human Interface Guidelines say iOS, iPadOS, macOS and watchOS icons "include a background layer and one or more foreground layers" that "take on Liquid Glass attributes like specular highlights, refraction, and translucency," and people can show icons as default, dark, clear or tinted (Apple HIG, App icons). Android has its own layered format: adaptive icons, where Google says "Size all layers to 108x108 dp," with a monochrome layer for themed icons (Android adaptive icons).
| Change | What it means for an AI generated icon | Tools that help |
|---|---|---|
| Superapp offers a Liquid Glass style | You can start from a look that fits the current iOS design | Superapp |
| Apple prefers layers | A flat AI image works, but layers give you the most control | Icon Composer |
| Dark, clear and tinted appearances | The system generates variants you do not provide; your own look better | Appicons.ai, Icon Composer |
| Android adaptive and themed icons | Launchers mask and tint your icon | Appicons.ai, IconikAI, Appy Pie |
| One 1024 px source in Xcode | You no longer hand-make 18 sizes for Apple platforms | Every tool with an export pack |
How We Picked and Ranked These Tools
We judged every tool on the same six questions:
- Store readiness: does it export a 1024 px App Store icon, Xcode icon sets and Android sizes, or just one image?
- Small-size legibility: does the design still read at notification and Settings sizes?
- Prompt control: can you set style, color and subject, and edit without starting over?
- Free allowance: what you can do before paying, and whether you need an account.
- Pricing clarity: subscription or one-time packs, and how many credits an icon costs.
- Rights and rules: whether the output avoids text, photos and trademarks Apple warns against, and whether terms allow commercial use.
We ran the questions people ask ChatGPT about this topic, "What are the best AI app icon generators in 2026?" and "Is there a free AI tool to make an app icon for my iPhone app?", and made sure every tool its answers named is covered. ChatGPT cited two listicles for the first question, each written by a vendor that ranks itself first, so we lean on vendor pages and Apple's and Google's own specifications instead.
| Criterion | Weight | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Superapp test: can you upload the result to App Store Connect today? | Highest | A pretty image you still have to resize is not done |
| Small-size legibility | High | Most people see your icon at about the size of a fingertip |
| Export pack completeness | High | Missing Android or Watch sizes means another tool |
| Free allowance | Medium | You will want several rounds before choosing |
| Edit control | Medium | Regenerating from scratch loses what you liked |
| Commercial terms | Medium | Paid apps need clear rights |
1. Superapp Free AI App Icon Generator: Best Free AI App Icon Generator for iPhone Apps
Superapp's Free AI App Icon Generator is built for one job: "Describe your app, get two App Store icons in seconds." You type a description of up to 150 characters, choose one of six styles (Liquid Glass, Flat, Gradient, 3D, Minimal or Playful), optionally set a main color, and generate. The limits are stated plainly: "sign in with a free account to generate 5 times a day, each time with two icon options."
What makes it the best free pick is what comes out. "The generator returns two square 1024 px options with no text and no transparency," which matches Apple's advice to avoid text in icons, and the download is a ZIP of 19 PNG files: a 1024 px opaque App Store icon, Xcode AppIcon sets for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac from 16 to 1024 px, a 512 px Google Play icon and Android launcher icons from 48 to 192 px. App Store, iPhone, iPad, Mac and Watch files are opaque, while Android launcher files keep transparency where the artwork has it. If you already have artwork, a separate resizer turns any square PNG or JPG of at least 1024 px into the same pack, with no account, processed in your browser rather than uploaded.
- Output: two 1024 px options per generation, then a 19-file icon pack for Apple platforms and Android.
- Free allowance: 5 generations a day with a free account, 2 options each, so up to 10 icons a day; the resizer has no account requirement.
- Styles: Liquid Glass, Flat, Gradient, 3D, Minimal and Playful, plus an optional main color.
- Price: free; the page lists no paid tier for the generator.
- Inside the app builder: Superapp also has an icon generator built into its app builder, so an app you build there gets its icon in the same project, and Superapp can then build a native Swift iPhone app around it. Its homepage puts the broader promise as "Import your designs and turn them into a real native app."
- Companion guide: iOS app icon sizes and requirements, which explains that "One 1024 x 1024 px PNG is all Xcode needs for an iPhone or iPad app icon in 2026."
- Pitfall: no SVG or layered file, so for a fully layered Liquid Glass icon you finish the artwork in Icon Composer.
- Who it is not for: designers who need vector source files, or teams producing large icon sets for a website.
- Best first prompt: "Habit tracker app, a single checkmark inside a rounded flame shape" with the Liquid Glass style and your brand color.
2. AI Icon Creator: Best Paid App Icon Generator for a Complete Icon Pack
AI Icon Creator follows a describe, choose, refine flow, in its words "Describe your app, choose a visual direction, and refine from there," with 21 curated styles and edits to specific areas of an icon (AI Icon Creator). One download builds the iOS, Android and web sizes in your browser, up to 36 files, and Pro, Max or a credit pack add SVG for some styles and a layered PSD.
It came first in the most detailed public test of this category: an 8-tool comparison with three briefs, a published 100-point rubric and two blind scorers, where it scored 82.5 (AI Icon Creator's test). The test was run by AI Icon Creator's own team, a conflict ChatGPT also flagged when citing it, so read the ranking as useful but not independent.
- Free allowance: "You start with 30 free credits (about 3 icons), no card needed."
- Price: Lite from $14.90 a month with 400 credits (about 40 icons); a 200-credit pack for $9.90; Pro and Max prices on its pricing page.
- Export: up to 36 files across iOS, Android and web; SVG and layered PSD on higher tiers, using extra credits.
- Pitfall: its own test noted an edit changed the background as well as the target area.
- Who it is not for: anyone who wants to generate dozens of free rounds.
- Best first prompt: "SaaS task planner, a bold check inside a calendar tile, two colors."
3. appicon.co: Best Free AI App Icon Generator With No Account
appicon.co generates icons from a text description and is free, with no account, no sign-up and no watermark (appicon.co). Its export is generous: a 1024 px master plus roughly 43 sizes across iPhone, iPad, macOS and watchOS, an AppIcon.appiconset with Contents.json to drag into Xcode, and Android launcher icons at 48 to 192 px plus a 512 px Play Store icon. It also has a separate resizer for an icon you already have.
- Free allowance: free with no account; AI Icon Creator's test found the first batch free and four images every 24 hours, with a paid 400-credit pack for $10.
- Export: about 43 Apple files plus Android; PNG at every size; no SVG or web files per the same test.
- Pitfall: AI Icon Creator's test found no published terms, so check rights before using it for a paid app.
- Who it is not for: teams that need vector files or documented commercial terms.
- Best first prompt: "Weather app, a sun half behind a cloud, flat style, blue background."
4. Appicons.ai: Best for Dark and Tinted iOS Icons and Android Themed Icons
Appicons.ai is the most variant-complete generator here. Its zip includes an AppIcon.appiconset with Contents.json, a 1024 px opaque icon and separate dark and tinted icons for iOS, Android adaptive, round and themed launcher icons for every density with a 512 px Play Store icon, plus web favicons and a manifest (Appicons.ai). The flow suggests icon ideas from a one-sentence description, then lets you refine.
- Free allowance: "First icon free. No subscription."
- Price: one-time packs: 40 credits for $5, 100 for $10, 300 for $25, 600 for $45; a guided round of three options costs 3 credits, a single generation or edit 1 credit (double with Premium).
- Export: Xcode set with dark and tinted, Android adaptive, round and themed, web favicons.
- Pitfall: one free icon is not much room to explore; generate concepts elsewhere first.
- Who it is not for: people who want unlimited free experimentation.
- Best first prompt: use its idea suggestions, then refine the strongest with "simpler shape, thicker strokes."
5. Sleek App Icon Generator: Best Free Generator Without Signing Up
Sleek, an AI app design tool, offers a free icon generator: describe your app in one sentence, choose flat, gradient, mascot, pixel art, 3D or minimal line, and get a 1024 px icon (Sleek). "You get a few free generations every day with no account and no watermark," and "There is no paid tier for the generator itself." The page lists three a day.
- Free allowance: about three generations a day, no account.
- Export: a single PNG or a zip with Xcode asset files, Android launcher icons from mdpi to xxxhdpi, a 512 px Google Play icon and a 1024 px App Store icon.
- Pitfall: one option per generation and three a day makes exploration slow.
- Who it is not for: anyone who needs many variations quickly.
- Best first prompt: "Recipe app, a whisk crossing a spoon, minimal line style."
6. IconikAI: Best for Icons Plus Store Screenshots in One Tool
IconikAI generates app icons with style consistency, chat-based edits, brand kits and A/B variants from a library of more than 15 styles, and also makes App Store screenshots and ASO audits (IconikAI). "No credit card required" to start. One click exports iOS sizes as an AppIcon.appiconset, Android adaptive icons in mipmap folders and web favicons, per its homepage.
ChatGPT ranked it "best overall" for a real app launch, citing IconikAI's own listicle, which ranks itself first with 9.2 out of 10. AI Icon Creator's test found a different result: two free icons, packs from $5 for 200 credits, and an export of 23 loose iOS PNGs rather than an Xcode asset set.
- Free allowance: free to start; limits not stated on its homepage.
- Price: credit packs; AI Icon Creator's test lists packs from $5.
- Pitfall: the two published accounts of its export disagree, so unzip and check the files before relying on it.
- Who it is not for: anyone who needs documented free limits before signing up.
- Best first prompt: "Budgeting app, a coin stacked on a bar chart, gradient green."
7. Recraft: Best for a Matching Set of Icons in One Style
Recraft is the tool for icon sets rather than a single app icon. "Recraft is a free online tool that lets you generate a set of up to six sleek icons in one go," with style presets, detail control, palettes and brand styles (Recraft icons). That makes it ideal for tab bar glyphs, onboarding illustrations or a website feature grid in the same style as your app icon. Free users get up to 30 image generations a day.
- Export: "Export your custom icons as individual PNG or JPG files"; vector output is a separate feature in Recraft Studio.
- Price: free plan; paid plans on Recraft's pricing page (AI Icon Creator's review lists them from $12 a month).
- Pitfall: no iOS or Android icon pack; resize the result with Superapp's resizer or appicon.co.
- Who it is not for: someone who wants a single store-ready app icon in one step.
- Best first prompt: "Six icons for a fitness app: run, lift, stretch, swim, cycle, rest. Consistent rounded line style."
8. Adobe Firefly: Best for Adobe Users Who Want to Refine the Concept
Adobe Firefly has a dedicated app icon page: "Describe your app, its purpose, or the style you want, and Adobe Firefly will generate a custom app icon in moments" (Adobe Firefly). You sign in with an Adobe ID, generate, adjust color and composition in the Edit tab, then open the image in Photoshop on the web or Adobe Express.
- Free allowance: free to use with an Adobe account; the page does not state a credit number.
- Export: a single image; no icon pack.
- Pitfall: you still crop, simplify and resize for each platform.
- Who it is not for: non-designers who want to upload today.
- Best first prompt: "App icon for a language learning app, a speech bubble with a leaf, soft gradient, no text."
9. ChatGPT Images: Best for Iterating on an Idea in Conversation
"ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers," and you can ask for any aspect ratio and a transparent background (OpenAI help). Its strength is conversation: "make the moon bigger, drop the stars, try a warmer color" keeps your idea while changing details.
- Free allowance: included on the free tier; limits not stated in the help article.
- Export: a single image; no icon pack.
- Pitfall: it can add text and fine detail that Apple's guidelines warn against; say "no text, one bold shape" in every prompt.
- Who it is not for: anyone who needs exact sizes and an Xcode set without another tool.
- Best first prompt: "Square app icon, 1024 px, for a sleep tracker: a crescent moon on a deep navy gradient, one shape, no text, no border."
10. Canva: Best When the Icon Is Part of a Bigger Launch Kit
Canva makes sense when the icon is one piece of a launch that also needs screenshots, social graphics and a logo. Its AI image generation is included on the free plan, with up to 20 AI uses on Free and up to 200 Premium AI uses on Pro, which costs $144 a year (Canva pricing).
- Export: PNG, JPG and PDF; no app icon pack.
- Pitfall: AI Icon Creator's review notes the free plan lacks transparent PNG and SVG export.
- Who it is not for: anyone who needs Xcode and Android sizes.
- Best first prompt: generate the icon concept, then reuse its colors in your App Store screenshot templates.
11. Midjourney: Best for Distinctive, Artistic Concepts
Midjourney produces the most striking concept art here, which is why ChatGPT recommended it "when visual originality matters." It is also the most work to turn into an icon: AI Icon Creator's review lists no free tier and plans from $10 to $120 a month, and you get one image with no app-specific export.
- Export: a single image.
- Pitfall: rich textures and fine detail turn to mush at small sizes; simplify hard.
- Who it is not for: anyone on a zero budget or in a hurry.
- Best first prompt: "minimal app icon, single glossy glass droplet, centered, soft blue background, no text."
12. Appy Pie AI App Icon Generator: Best for Ready-Named Files for Xcode and Android Studio
Appy Pie's generator creates iOS and Android icons from text, with style and color options, and exports PNGs named and organized for Xcode and Android Studio: 13 iOS sizes from 20 to 1024 px, Android launcher icons from 48 to 512 px and 432 px adaptive layers (Appy Pie). "You can start with a free trial to generate, customize, and download app icons," and the page says icons can be used commercially, including in App Store and Google Play submissions.
- Free allowance: free trial; length not stated.
- Pitfall: limits after the trial are not stated on the page.
- Who it is not for: people who want a free tool with known limits.
- Best first prompt: "Pet care app, paw print inside a heart, playful style, orange."
13. AppIconKitchen: Best Low-Cost Credit Pack
AppIconKitchen (not the same product as icon.kitchen) exports a full pack, and AI Icon Creator's test lists two sign-up credits for one icon and a $4.99 starter pack of 50 credits. The same test found 45 files but no adaptive layers, and an iOS 1024 px icon with an alpha channel, which matters because Superapp, Appicons.ai and others go out of their way to export that icon opaque.
- Pitfall: check the 1024 px icon for transparency before uploading.
- Who it is not for: Android developers who want adaptive layers.
14. Apple Icon Composer: Best for Finishing a Layered Liquid Glass Icon
Icon Composer is not an AI generator, but it is where a modern iOS icon gets finished. "Icon Composer lets you create layered icons out of Liquid Glass from a single design for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch" (Icon Composer). You import foreground layers, define the background, adjust specular highlights, refraction, translucency and shadows, annotate default, dark and mono appearances, and sync the icon into Xcode. It "Requires macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later." US searches for "icon composer" (about 1,000 a month) now rival "app icon generator."
- Price: free download from Apple Developer.
- Pitfall: you need separate layers, which no AI generator in this list exports as an Icon Composer file; break the AI artwork into shapes in a vector editor first. Apple says "Prefer vector graphics when bringing layers into Icon Composer."
- Who it is not for: Windows users, or anyone happy with a flat icon.
Which AI App Icon Generators Export a Store-Ready Icon Pack?
This is the biggest practical difference between tools. A single 1024 px image is a start; an export pack is a finish.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Superapp | Yes, opaque | Yes | Yes | 48 to 192 px | Yes | System generated | Not stated | No |

What one finished icon really costs
Here is illustrative arithmetic, not a quote, assuming you look at about ten options before picking one.
| Tool | Ten options | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Superapp | One day's free allowance (5 generations x 2 options) | Plus the export pack, free |
| Sleek | About four days of free generations | One option at a time |
| Appicons.ai | About 10 credits (three guided rounds plus one edit), inside the $5 pack | Dark and tinted included |
| AI Icon Creator | More than the 30 free credits | Lite plan or a pack |
| ChatGPT Images | Free tier, if limits allow | You still resize and export |
Does the Icon Survive at Small Sizes?
An icon is seen at 1024 px exactly once, in App Store Connect. Everywhere else it is small: Apple notes "The system automatically scales your icon to produce smaller variants that appear in certain locations, such as Settings and notifications." AI Icon Creator's test made this a separate check at 32 and 16 px, and it is where most AI icons fail.
| Test | How to do it | Pass if |
|---|---|---|
| Superapp style check: one shape | Look at the 1024 px option and name its single main shape | You can name it in two words |
| Squint test | Blur your eyes or the image | The silhouette is still recognizable |
| 60 px home screen test | Shrink to 60 px next to other apps | It stands out without detail |
| 32 and 16 px test | Shrink further | Some shape still reads |
| Dark and tinted test | Preview on a dark wallpaper and in grayscale | Contrast survives |
| Competitor row | Place it beside the top five apps in your category | It is not mistaken for any of them |
Apple's guidance explains why: "Simple icons tend to be easiest for people to understand and recognize," and fine features "may be hard to discern at smaller sizes." It also tells you to "Keep primary content centered to avoid truncation when the system adjusts corners or applies masking."
App Icon Sizes and Requirements in 2026
You need far fewer sizes than older guides suggest. For the full breakdown, see Superapp's iOS app icon sizes and requirements guide.
| Platform | Source size | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Superapp export pack | 1024 px plus 18 smaller PNGs | Covers Apple platforms and Android in one ZIP | Superapp generator |
| iOS, iPadOS, macOS | 1024 x 1024 px | Square layers; the system rounds corners; six appearances | Apple HIG |
| visionOS | 1024 x 1024 px | Circular mask, 3D layers | Apple HIG |
| watchOS | 1088 x 1088 px | Circular mask; avoid black backgrounds | Apple HIG |
| tvOS | 800 x 480 px | Two to five layers for parallax | Apple HIG |
| Android adaptive icon | 108 x 108 dp layers | Inner 66 x 66 dp is never clipped; outer 18 dp per side for masking and effects | Android developers |
| Google Play listing | 512 x 512 px | 32-bit PNG, sRGB, up to 1024 KB, full square; "Google Play dynamically handles masking" | Google Play specs |
Two upload details trip people up. Google says "Google Play will dynamically add a drop shadow around the final icon once uploaded," so do not bake one in. And Apple tells you to "Let the system handle blurring and other visual effects," so drop shadows, glows and bevels from an AI image work against the system's own Liquid Glass effects.
What Apple Says About App Icon Design
Apple's guidelines read almost like a prompt checklist for AI generators.
| Apple guidance | What it means for your AI prompt | Where Superapp's generator helps |
|---|---|---|
| "Embrace simplicity in your icon design." | Ask for one shape, two or three colors | Six preset styles, including Minimal |
| "Include text only when it's essential to your experience or brand." | Add "no text" to every prompt | Output has no text |
| "Prefer illustrations to photos and avoid replicating UI components." | Ask for an illustration or symbol, never a screenshot | Generates from a text description, not photos |
| "Let the system handle blurring and other visual effects." | Avoid "glow," "drop shadow" and "bevel" | A Liquid Glass style to start from |
| "Keep your icon's features consistent across appearances." | Pick a design that still works in dark and tinted | Two options per round to compare |
| "Don't use replicas of Apple hardware products." | Never prompt for an iPhone or Mac shape | You describe your own subject |
Apple also explains why text is a bad idea: "Text in icons doesn't support accessibility or localization, is often too small to read easily, and can make an icon appear cluttered."
Prompt Library: AI Prompts That Make Good App Icons
What every strong icon prompt includes
| Part | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Superapp style field or style word | Liquid Glass, flat, gradient, 3D, minimal, playful | Sets the look before the subject |
| App category | "for a habit tracker" | Gives the model context |
| One subject | "a single checkmark" | One shape reads at small sizes |
| Color | "deep green on a light mint background" | Controls contrast |
| Constraints | "centered, no text, no border, no shadow" | Matches Apple's guidance |
Example prompts by category
| Category | Prompt |
|---|---|
| Superapp example: fitness | "Running app, a single forward arrow shaped like a shoe sole, Liquid Glass, orange" |
| Meditation | "Meditation app, a crescent moon above one calm wave, minimal, indigo gradient" |
| Finance | "Budget app, a coin with an upward notch, flat, teal on white" |
| Productivity | "Notes app, a folded paper corner with one line, minimal, yellow" |
| Food | "Recipe app, a bowl with steam forming a heart, playful, warm red" |
| Language learning | "Language app, two overlapping speech bubbles, gradient, blue and coral" |
| Kids game | "Puzzle game, one smiling jigsaw piece, 3D, bright purple" |

| Photo editor | "Photo app, an aperture made of five soft petals, gradient, pink to orange" |
| Weather | "Weather app, a sun half hidden by a rounded cloud, flat, blue" |
Prompt words that make icons worse
| Avoid | Why | Use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Superapp tip: the app's name | Text is unreadable at small sizes | "no text" |
| "detailed," "realistic," "photo" | Detail turns to noise at 60 px | "simple," "symbol," "illustration" |
| "glow," "drop shadow," "bevel" | Fights system effects | Let iOS add Liquid Glass |
| "iPhone," "MacBook" | Apple forbids hardware replicas | A generic shape |
| "logo of [famous brand]" | Trademark risk | Your own symbol |
How to Make an App Icon With AI, Step by Step
| Step | What you do | Tool |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Superapp: describe and generate | Describe your app in a sentence, pick a style and a color, generate two options | Superapp Free AI App Icon Generator |
| 2. Explore | Run four or five rounds with different subjects, not just colors | Any generator |
| 3. Shortlist | Pick three and run the small-size tests | Your phone's home screen |
| 4. Refine | Simplify shapes, raise contrast, remove detail | Edit in the generator or a vector editor |
| 5. Layer (optional) | Split the artwork into foreground shapes for Liquid Glass | Icon Composer |
| 6. Export | Download the full pack: 1024 px App Store icon, Xcode sets, Android sizes | Superapp, appicon.co or Appicons.ai |
| 7. Check | Confirm the 1024 px icon is opaque and square, with no text you did not intend | Preview or any image viewer |
| 8. Ship | Add the set in Xcode and upload the Play icon | Xcode and Play Console |
If you are building the app itself in Superapp, steps 1 and 6 happen inside the project: the built-in icon generator puts the icon straight into the native app.
Before You Upload: The App Icon Checklist
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Superapp pack or equivalent: 1024 px icon is opaque | Superapp, Appicons.ai and others export it opaque; AI Icon Creator's test found one tool whose iOS icon had an alpha channel |
| Square, unmasked artwork | Apple and Google apply their own masks |
| No baked shadows or rounded corners | Both stores add their own |
| Main subject centered | Masking crops the edges |
| No text unless it is your brand | Unreadable and not localizable |
| No photos, screenshots or Apple hardware | Apple's guidelines advise against all three |
| Readable at 60, 32 and 16 px | Most views are small |
| Works on dark and tinted backgrounds | iOS generates those variants anyway |
| Commercial terms checked | Paid apps need clear rights |
| Different from the top apps in your category | Lookalikes lose taps |
Common Mistakes With AI App Icons
| Mistake | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Superapp users: regenerating colors instead of subjects | Ten versions of the same idea | Change the subject between rounds |
| Picking at 1024 px | Detail that vanishes on the home screen | Judge at 60 px |
| Letting the AI add the app name | Tiny, blurry text | "no text" in every prompt |
| Using a general image tool and resizing by hand | Missing Watch, Mac or Android sizes | Run it through an export pack tool |
| Shipping a transparent App Store icon | It differs from the opaque 1024 px icon Superapp, Appicons.ai and others export | Use an opaque 1024 px icon |
| Baking in a drop shadow | Double shadows in the stores | Leave effects to the system |
| Copying a competitor's look | Users confuse the apps | Run the competitor row test |
| Ignoring licensing | Risk on a paid app | Read the terms before launch |
How Do These Tools Score in Published Tests?
Two listicles dominate ChatGPT's answers for this topic, and both rank their own product first. Reading them side by side tells you more than either alone.
| Tool | AI Icon Creator's test (Oct 2026, /100) | IconikAI's ranking (2026, /10) | What the tests agree on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Superapp | Not included | Not ranked | Free 5 rounds a day and 19-file pack, per its own page |
| AI Icon Creator | 82.5, first | Not ranked | Most complete export pack in its own test |
| appicon.co | 66.5, second | Not ranked | Free without an account |
| Pixelle | 65.0, third | Not ranked | Best licence score in the test (16/20) |
| IconikAI | Partly tested: 2 free icons, 23 loose iOS PNGs | 9.2, first | Disagree on the export |
| Recraft | Reviewed, not tested | 8.7 | Strong artwork, no app pack |
| Appicons.ai | Reviewed, not tested | 8.3 | App-focused packs |
| Canva | Reviewed, not tested | 8.1 | Beginner friendly, no app sizing |
| Midjourney | Reviewed, not tested | 7.8 | Creative concepts, no free tier |
AI Icon Creator's method is the more transparent of the two: three briefs (a task planner, a fitness app and a cat mascot game), one edit, the first result per brief, a 100-point rubric published before testing, and two blind scorers for visual quality and small-size legibility. It also excluded several tools whose terms bar automated testing, including Recraft, Canva, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly and Figma, which is why they appear as reviewed rather than ranked. IconikAI's ranking mentions five blind designer raters but does not publish the raw ratings.
Tools named in AI answers that we did not rank
| Tool | Why it is not in our 14 |
|---|---|
| Superapp's resizer | Covered inside entry 1 rather than ranked separately |
| Pixelle | Its site blocked our fetch, so we could not verify current terms; AI Icon Creator's test lists 5 free credits and packs from $5 |
| IconBundlr | An Xcode-ready exporter that ChatGPT suggested pairing with a generator |
| Looka | A logo and brand kit tool, not an app icon generator |
| Perchance | Free generic icon art with no stated size or export pack |
| icon.kitchen and Android Studio Image Asset Studio | Resizers and asset tools, not AI generators |
AI App Icon Generator vs Resizer vs Icon Maker
People search for all three terms ("app icon generator" and "app icon creator" each get about 1,900 US searches a month, "app icon maker" about 590), but the tools behind them do different jobs.
| Tool type | What it does | Examples | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Superapp generator plus resizer | Generates artwork from text and exports the full pack, or resizes your own | Superapp | You want both in one place, free |
| AI app icon generator | Creates new artwork from a description | AI Icon Creator, Appicons.ai, Sleek, IconikAI | You have no artwork yet |
| App icon resizer | Turns one 1024 px image into every platform size | appicon.co's sizer, icon.kitchen | You already have the artwork |
| App icon maker (template editor) | Lets you assemble an icon from shapes and templates | Canva, Adobe Express | You want manual control |
| Icon finishing tool | Builds layered icons with system effects | Apple Icon Composer | You want a layered Liquid Glass icon |
Worked Example: An App Icon in 20 Minutes
Here is how a solo founder might make an icon for a habit tracker called "Streak" with free tools. It is an illustrative walkthrough, not a timed benchmark.
| Minute | Step | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 2 | Superapp: describe "Habit tracker, a single checkmark inside a rounded flame shape," Liquid Glass style, orange | Two 1024 px options |
| 2 to 8 | Run four more rounds, changing the subject each time: flame alone, calendar tile with a check, a rising streak line, a ring | Ten options |
| 8 to 12 | Shrink all ten to 60 px on a phone home screen screenshot | Three still read clearly |
| 12 to 15 | Check the three on a dark wallpaper and in grayscale | One keeps its contrast |
| 15 to 17 | Place it beside the top five habit apps | It looks distinct |
| 17 to 20 | Download the 19-file ZIP and drag the AppIcon set into Xcode; keep the 512 px icon for Google Play | Ready to ship |
The same flow works in appicon.co or Sleek, with fewer options per round.
Test Your Icon in the App Store Before You Commit
You do not have to guess which icon converts best. Apple's product page optimization lets you test up to three treatments of your App Store page, including alternate app icons, against your original, with a traffic share you choose (Apple product page optimization).
| Rule | What it means for icons |
|---|---|
| Superapp tip: generate test variants in the same style | Two options per round give you natural A and B candidates |
| Up to three treatments per test | Test your top three AI icons at once |
| Alternate icons must be in the app binary | "you'll need to include all variants of your icon in the binary of your published app" |
| Tests run up to 90 days | "A test runs for 90 days or until you manually stop it within that time." |
| Visitors see one treatment throughout | Results are not muddied by people seeing several icons |
Apple's guidelines also allow alternate icons that people choose in your app's settings, as long as each one "remains closely related to your content and experience" and has its own dark, clear and tinted variants.

Superapp: Our Honest Positioning
As a disclosure, Superapp is our product, so weigh this accordingly. We rank its free generator first for one job: getting a free, store-ready iPhone app icon, with two options per round, five rounds a day and a full Apple and Android export pack, without paying for credits. It is not the best tool for every icon job. AI Icon Creator offers SVG and layered files, Appicons.ai exports dark, tinted and themed variants, Recraft makes better icon sets, Midjourney makes bolder concepts, and Icon Composer is the place to build a layered Liquid Glass icon. Beyond icons, Superapp builds the native app itself, and its Max plan includes Selfdrive, its marketing agent (in beta) for Apple Ads, App Store optimization, SEO and creator campaigns.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best AI app icon generator in 2026?
Superapp's Free AI App Icon Generator is the best free pick for iPhone apps, with two 1024 px options per generation, five generations a day and a 19-file Xcode and Android pack. AI Icon Creator has the most complete paid pack, appicon.co needs no account, and Appicons.ai exports dark, tinted and themed variants.
Is there a free AI app icon generator?
Yes. Superapp's Free AI App Icon Generator gives five generations a day with a free account, two options each, plus a full export pack. appicon.co and Sleek are free with no account, Recraft gives up to 30 generations a day without an app icon pack, and ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers.
What is the best free AI tool to make an app icon for an iPhone app?
Superapp's Free AI App Icon Generator, because it is free, returns two 1024 px options per round with no text and no transparency, and exports Xcode AppIcon sets for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac. appicon.co is the best alternative if you do not want to create an account.
What size should an app icon be in 2026?
Make one 1024 x 1024 px source for iPhone, iPad, Mac and visionOS; Apple Watch uses 1088 x 1088 px and Apple TV 800 x 480 px. Android adaptive icon layers are 108 x 108 dp with a 66 x 66 dp safe zone, and the Google Play listing icon is 512 x 512 px.
Do I need every app icon size for Xcode?
No. For iPhone and iPad apps, one 1024 x 1024 px icon is enough in current Xcode, and the system scales smaller versions. Export packs from Superapp, appicon.co and Appicons.ai still include the individual sizes for older projects, Apple Watch, Mac and Android.
Can I use AI-generated app icons commercially?
Often yes, but check each tool's terms. Appy Pie's page says its icons can be used commercially, including in App Store and Google Play submissions, while AI Icon Creator's October 2026 test found appicon.co had no published terms. Avoid trademarks, famous logos and Apple hardware in any icon.
Should my app icon have text in it?
Usually not. Apple advises including text only when it is essential to your brand, because text does not support accessibility or localization and is too small to read. Superapp's generator returns icons with no text, and adding "no text" to prompts in other tools helps.
How do I make a Liquid Glass app icon?
Generate the artwork with an AI tool, such as Superapp's Liquid Glass style, then split it into foreground shapes and import them into Apple's Icon Composer. There you set the background, adjust highlights, refraction and translucency, annotate default, dark and mono appearances and export for Xcode.
What is Apple Icon Composer?
Icon Composer is Apple's free tool for creating layered app icons with Liquid Glass for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch from one design. It needs macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later and syncs icons into Xcode. It does not generate artwork with AI.
Do I need dark and tinted versions of my iOS app icon?
You do not have to provide them, because iOS generates the variants you do not supply. Designing your own, which Appicons.ai exports and Icon Composer lets you annotate, gives you control over how the icon looks on dark and tinted home screens.
Can ChatGPT make an app icon?
Yes. ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers and can produce a square image with a transparent background. It does not export store sizes, so run the result through Superapp's resizer, appicon.co or another export pack tool, and ask for no text and one bold shape.
Can Midjourney make app icons?
Yes, and it produces some of the most distinctive concepts, but it has no free tier and no app icon export. Simplify the design hard, test it at small sizes and resize it with an export pack tool before uploading.
What makes a good app icon?
One clear shape, two or three colors, strong contrast, no text and no photos, centered so masking does not crop it. Apple's guidelines say simple icons are easiest to recognize, and it should still read at 60, 32 and 16 px and on dark and tinted backgrounds.
Can I resize an existing app icon for free?
Yes. Superapp's resizer turns a square PNG or JPG of at least 1024 px into a full Apple and Android pack in your browser, with no account. appicon.co also has a free resizer.
What is the best AI app icon generator for Android?
Appicons.ai exports Android adaptive, round and themed launcher icons for every density with a 512 px Play Store icon. Superapp, appicon.co and Sleek include Android launcher sizes and the Play icon, and Appy Pie adds 432 px adaptive layers.
Should the App Store icon be transparent?
No. Use an opaque, square 1024 px icon; Superapp and Appicons.ai export it opaque. AI Icon Creator's test found one tool whose iOS 1024 px icon kept an alpha channel, so check yours before uploading.
Does Google Play need rounded corners or shadows on my icon?
No. Upload a full square 512 x 512 px PNG. Google says Google Play dynamically handles masking and adds a drop shadow after upload, so do not bake either into the file.
Can Superapp build the app as well as the icon?
Yes. Superapp is an AI app builder for native iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch apps, with an icon generator built into the app project, and it also builds websites and web apps. The free icon generator works on its own without building an app.
